These days birth seems to be feared by so many health professionals. Often the focus is on all the things that can go wrong or could go wrong. There are tests on tests on scans on tests.
Women have been having babies for millions of years! And for the most part without medical intervention. Yes there are the times when things don’t go to plan but lets not focus all our attention on this, rather we should be supporting our mothers to have empowered and supported pregnancies and births.
The birth of a baby is not just a birth, it is the transition to womanhood for the mum, it is such a pivotal point in a females life and it should be carefully planned and supported. This is where the support of a Doula really comes into play.
Every woman is going to have their on comfort zone for what tests, scans and appointments they need to feel comfortable with their pregnancy and the health of their baby. A doula can hep you navigate this complex system to talk you through what each test is looking for and what the outcomes can mean. For example many women go along to their 12 week scan without even knowing what the purpose is of that scan. The 12 week scan is the nuchal translucency scan, which is also followed up with a blood test. Both of these tests are looking for the probability of having a baby with Downs Syndrome. So for some this is a welcome scan to see their baby and they are not bothered by the outcome, for others they have decided that if they were to be carrying a baby with Downs then they would terminate the pregnancy. There is no right or wrong, but often women are not even aware that this scans sole purpose is to see if the baby has Downs.
There is more and more testing in pregnancy now too, GTT blood glucose testing is now done earlier than ever before and then often it is repeated over and over. There is swabs take for Group B Strep now in pregnancy even though if this tests positive at 38 weeks there is no guarantee that it will still be present at the birth, as it is so transient. Although the hospital will still encourage antibiotics to be given in labour if there has been a positive test.
Often what the information women are given is not backed by evidence or even best practice, even common sense some times.
We need to get back to trusting birth, trusting the process and trusting our intuition. We sit here in 2018 with most babies born in a hospital, in first world countries, and yet our outcomes are worse than ever before. C sections are as high as 70% of all births in some hospitals and women are often left feeling dis empowered and disconnected from their births.
As a doula it is my job to hold space for the Mum and to support the Dad to achieve a birth that they are proud of! A birth that empowers them and aligns with their values. This does not always mean we get exactly what we set out for in the beginning, as sometimes the plan has to change, but at all times the Mum and Dad are informed and empowered to take the time to make decisions that work for them.
There is noting to fear in birth, the body has such an amazing intricate hormone system that supports the body to birth with ease. Then main job of the Mum is to manage her thoughts and not let them get away on her. This can be easily mastered with some preparations and practice before birth.
I really hope that all women that are pregnancy take the time to find a doula to support them on their journey.
Living a natural healthy lifestyle, its not about being fashionable or trendy its a lifestyle. One where you need to be organised and well thought out. I often get calls form patients they have a sick child or they are sick themselves and they are asking for advice. I love that they are reaching out, and if you know me you know that I love to help. The problem is that they often have nothing at home that they need, no first aid kit or really anything that is useful! Its TOO LATE to wait until you are sick to be organising what you need.
1 – Sodium Ascorbate!
Hahaha I can hear the laughs from here! Its true Number 1 most important thing to have at home…. There is not much that this stuff can’t help with!!! anti inflammatory, take just when illness is setting in, gargle for sore throats, spray on wounds or burns, great for allergic reactions. and much more.
I buy the big containers as they are more economical and last longer!
2 – Colloidal Silver – Great fro so much, sore ears, sore throat, infected cuts grazes, cleaning out wounds. cheap and very useful – I sell this for $15 for a 500ml bottle.
3 – Diatomaceous Earth
Great for when you have a sore tummy, great for minimising allergic reactions,
dealing with worms or parasites.
4 – Echinacea
Great for kicking the immune system into gear to help fight off something.
5 – Kawakawa cream – this is made from an old maori recipe using kawakawa which is a plant with amazing healing powers. Great for healing wounds and infections.
Now its time to go out and start putting some items together for your Natural First Aid box at home. So that next time someone is unwell or needs repairing you have all the buts you need.
I am seeing soooo many autoimmune disorders in clinic at the moment. I guess the good news is that I am also seeing really great results with treatments too.
An autoimmune disease is when your body has an abnormal immune response to an otherwise normal body part or process. There are loads of different autoimmune disease I have named a few above but there are at least 80 odd.
#1 – Natural contraceptive – the pill and other forms of synthetic hormones used in contraceptives are causing mayhem in the body and endocrine system. Often women are using these sorts of contraceptives for many years. I understand that careful family planning is super important to some people but at the cost of total health? I think we need to be looking at other alternatives to hormone based contraceptive.
#2 – Diet – Gluten free is a must and actually, you could add dairy free too if you want to be really safe. The effects of wheat and gluten on the body are well documented. They are high in sugar causing spikes in blood sugars and visceral fats and they cause inflammation.
#3 household Goods – Many plastics, pots and pans and other house hold wares have nasty chemicals that are endocrine disrupters.
Glass containers for storage
Stainless steel, clay or cast iron are great for cooking
Out with the Plastic wrap, tin foil & baking paper. There are many options now for more sustainable and healthy options
Glass, pottery or stainless plates, serving plates and pretties.
#4 Cleaning Products – Again there are so many cost-effective options now for alternatives to the usual cleaning products that line our supermarket isles. Many of the eco ranges are made from plant based materials which are safe. Good old baking soda and vinegar go a long way in helping to clean the house.
The list could go on and on but let’s take health in bite sized pieces. That way it feels like its achievable. Take your time, but look at your lifestyle and house hold to see where you can make changes for a for a healthier you.
Antibacterial – Colloidal silver is antibacterial – this is important! We are seeing more and more antibiotic resistant bugs in an era where antibiotics are prescribed for EVERYTHING! Colloidal silver does not create resistance or immunity in the organisms it kills.
Cuts and Scrapes – Colloidal silver is great for assisting in healing wounds (it encourages skin regeneration!) and will ensure that the wound does not get infected.
Sinusitis / Ear Infections / Conjunctivitis – Irritation, infection and inflammation of the mucous lining. Colloidal silver works fast by attracting the bacterial or viral infection and attaching itself electromagnetically then eliminating through the blood pathways.
Antiviral – Colloidal silver is a great antiviral remedy. It can be used in cases of herpes, shingles, pneumonia, warts and HIV.
Anti-inflammatory – In lab trials colloidal silver has been used on inflammation on the skin of rats and found that those treated topically with colloidal silver had much less inflammation 72 hrs after application.
Pneumonia / Coughs and Colds – Because of its antiviral antibacterial properties it is such a powerhouse when dealing with cough, colds and pneumonia. Ingesting is useful but often the best way to help with pneumonia especially is to breathe it right into the lungs via a nebuliser so that the colloidal silver can get right in there and begin to work.
I am hearing and seeing more and more illness, autoimmune disease, mental health issues even hormonal imbalances, and although they all have a very different story I find that we always end up a the same answer. The GUT!
The health of your gut is responsible for so much and we really need to be taking much better care or ourselves! The food that we put in our mouths is to nourish us and fuel our bodies, if we treated our cars half as bad as we treat our bodies then they would never start. No wonder we are sicker than before.
1 – Cut out refined sugars as much as possible. To sweeten baking use maple syrup or dates.
2- Eat whole foods, move away from packaged goods and make things form scratch. This does not need to be hard work. there are lots of great recipes around that don’t take hours to prepare. I cook for 8 each day and don’t spend more than 45 mins preparing dinner.
3- Try some fermented foods and drinks, Sauerkraut, Kim chi, Kombucha. You don’t need a lot but a small serving with each meal is great.
4 – Look at your elimination, if your metabolism is sluggish then chances are your digestive system needs a bit of help. Often this is due to low stomach acid or need for some digestive enzymes.
5 – Find yourself a health professional that can help you on your journey.
