Natural Health Protocols

Sharing my natural health protocols with other families is a labour of love. I feel strongly that all families should know how to support their health and address common ailments using traditional knowledge.

Natural Chicken Pox Protocol

Natural Chicken Pox Protocol

Over the last 20 years, I've worked with many (and I mean MANY) families to support their healing and recovery from chicken pox. I've decided to make all my protocols available to the public because I think this information is too important to be held by gatekeepers.

In this post, I’ll walk you through a gentle, holistic approach to managing chickenpox symptoms using homeopathy, herbs, supplements, and supportive topical treatments. As a homeopath, doula, and gut health specialist, I can tell you: how you support the body through this process really matters.

Whether your child is in the early stages or dealing with intense itch and discomfort, this guide offers clear, practical advice to help you feel calm, confident, and informed.

What Is Chickenpox?

Chickenpox is caused by the Varicella-Zoster virus (VZV), a double-stranded DNA herpesvirus. It spreads through droplets or contact with the blisters, and is most common in children aged 2 to 8 years, with peak cases occurring in spring and early summer in temperate climates.

The incubation period is 10–21 days, though in clinical experience, 17–21 days after exposure is typical. Children may first feel tired, a little warm, or sensitive to light—followed by the classic rash which starts as pimples, quickly forming itchy, fluid-filled blisters.

These dry up and scab over within a day or so, but new spots may appear in waves over 2–4 days. Chickenpox in childhood is usually mild, but supporting the body well can help ease discomfort and reduce the risk of complications or scarring.

WHAT TO AVOID

  • Paracetamol, ibuprofen or fever reducers – These suppress the immune response and may prolong illness or increase complication risk.
  • Bathing – Raises skin pH and creates ideal conditions for secondary infections.
  • Scratching – As much as possible, discourage scratching to prevent scarring and infection.

SUPPLEMENTS

Vitamin C (Sodium Ascorbate)

Supplement: OxyMin Sodium Ascorbate
Frequency: 4–5 doses per day
Dosage by age:
Baby: 1/8 tsp per dose
Toddler: 1/4 tsp per dose
Child: 1/2 tsp per dose
Adult: 1/2 tsp per dose

Vitamin A
Supplement: Adalase Biomedica (chewable)
Useful when children are light-sensitive (photophobic).
Dosage: Follow practitioner guidance.

Zinc (Zinc Picolinate)
Supplement: Give Back Health Zinc Picolinate
Dosage: 1/4 to 1/2 scoop daily (children)

Echinacea
Immune support; choose a glycerite for younger kids or alcohol-free formula if needed.

TOPICAL TREATMENTS

Avoid baths: Bathing can raise the skin’s pH, making it more susceptible to infection. Keeping the skin’s pH slightly acidic is essential to prevent secondary infections.

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)
Dab or compress onto spots for a few minutes to help neutralise the virus and ease itching.

Ascorbic Acid (AA) + Water Misting

    • Mix 10% ascorbic acid to 90% water.

    • Mist the whole body several times per day, especially before skin breaks.

    • Promotes healthy skin pH and supports good skin bacteria.

    • Sodium Ascorbate (SA) Misting
Use once blisters are open, as SA may sting. SA helps maintain healing-friendly pH without irritation.

HELPFUL HERBS

Calendula – Skin healing and soothing
Chamomile – Calming and anti-inflammatory
Chickweed – Soothes itching and irritation

Chickenpox is often a rite of passage in childhood, but that doesn’t mean your child has to suffer through it unsupported. With the right mix of homeopathy, nutrition, herbs, and skin care, you can make the process much gentler and help prevent complications like infection or scarring.
